November 24, 2009

World number 2 Rafael Nadal is on the brink of being knocked out of the final event of the season following another significant defeat to Swede Robin Soderling.

Down and out in Paris and London? Rafael Nadal lost yesterday to his French Open conquerer Robin Soderling - BBC

Soderling defeated Nadal in Paris in May to bring an end to the Spaniard’s 4-year domination at Roland Garros, and yesterday beat him in straight sets at the O2 Arena, 6-4 6-4.

Nadal must beat Nikolay Davydenko  tomorrow or face a likely exit from the competition.

Davydenko took a one-set lead in Monday’s evening match before being beaten by defending champion Novak Djokovic; the Serb should now progress to the semi finals with a win over Nadal or Soderling, who he faces tomorrow afternoon.

World number 1 Roger Federer defeated home favourite Andy Murray tonight - BBC

Tonight Roger Federer triumphed over Andy Murray 3-6 6-3 6-1, putting in a commanding final set performance with a series of superb service games and solid returns. Murray looked weary by the end as he was ground down by the world number one. Murray will qualify for the semi-finals with a win over Fernando Verdasco, who fell to a second successive defeat against countryman Juan Martin del Potro earlier in the day.

Del Potro faces Federer on Thursday: he will need to win, and hope Verdasco can do him a favour against Murray.
