Foster at fault again as United falter

Besiktas' players celebrate Tello's goal

Manchester United 0-1 Besiktas
Tello 20

Alex Ferguson’s latest batch of fledglings failed to deliver in a 1-0 home defeat to Besiktas in the Champions League.

The luckless Ben Foster was beaten by a speculative Rodrigo Tello shot from 30 yards, deceived by a crucial deflection off the shoulder of full-back Rafael Da Silva.

United have qualified for the second phase of the competition already, but their eight-year unbeaten home record in the group stages is now a thing of the past.

Youngsters Danny Wellbeck and Federico Macheda made little impression up front in a notably flat performance.

Besiktas, who were on the end of an 8-0 drubbing at Anfield the last time they visited the north west of England two years ago, moved the ball swiftly but carried little attacking threat.

A late surge nearly rescued a point for United. Patrice Evra went to ground in the area but referee Stephane Lannoy told his compatriot to get up, provoking a furious reaction from Ferguson. Rustu did well to deny Macheda and then Brown in injury time.

A win away to Wolfsburg would win the group for United – they will need to perform much better if they are to defeat the German champions.
