Lippi continues to snub Cassano

November 26, 2009

The debate as to whether Mercello Lippi should include Antonio Cassano in his World Cup squad refuses to go away, but the Azzurri boss has again reiterated his stance. This week Lippi told Italian magazine L’Espresso: “I am very sorry for Cassano as he is a good guy, but I have my own ideas.”

This comes a week after Lippi was once again jeered by Italian fans over his refusal to call up Cassano during the friendly win over Sweden. Supporters, and the Italian press, have put intense pressure on Lippi to include the Sampdoria striker since he re-took the international hot-seat after Euro 2008.

Despite impressive club performances Cassano has not featured for Italy since Lippi returned

Cassano has been in terrific form for Sampdoria in the past year, forming a great forward partnership with Giampaolo Pazzini. Speculation as to why Lippi has ignored Cassano focuses on personal differences between the two, and not even the often lacklustre performance of La Nazionale has convinced Lippi to turn to the controversial forward.

Cassano has not featured for Italy since Roberto Donadoni was in charge and they were knocked out of Euro 2008. Cassano last year boasted in his autobiography that he has slept with over 600 women. His goal scoring form would have to be even more impressive for Lippi to consider him for the World Cup.
