Herath’s efforts in vain as India pummel Sri Lanka

November 27, 2009

Rangana Herath took 5-122 as India amassed 642, but his efforts came to nothing as India skittled Sri Lanka twice to record an innings victory in Kanpur.

Sri Lanka initially recovered well from losing Tillekaratne Dilshan first ball but were skittled for 229 in 84 overs, with nobody contributing a half-century; five of India’s side reached that total with three – Gambhir, Sehwag, and Dravid – converting to big hundreds.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni predictably chose to enforce the follow-on with his side 413 runs ahead, but the tourists improved only marginally on their first effort.

Thilan Samaweera top scored in the second innings with an unbeaten 78 from 123 balls, but wickets fell around him at regular intervals. Harbajhan Singh took 3-98 from 22 overs and Pragyan Ojha picked up 2-36 to finish with tidy match figures of 4-73.

India go into the final test in Mumbai next week 1-0 ahead.
