Lines edges out Williams as UK Open hots up

Little-known world number 64 Peter Lines knocked former winner Mark Williams out of the UK Open in Telford yesterday as the competition reaches its quarter-final stage.

39-year old Lines beat Williams 9-8 in the second round and faces Stephen Maguire today. Maguire had an easier passage through, beating Stuart Bingham 9-3.

“That’s obviously the greatest win of my career,” Lines told BBC Sport.

“To beat Mark Williams, one of the best players to play the game, is unbelievable,” he added.

All the quarter-finals begin today:

Peter Lines v Stephen Maguire
Ronnie O’ Sullivan v Mark Selby
Liang Wenbo v John Higgins
Ding Junhui v Allister Carter

All matches are best of 17.
