Ryan Giggs celebrates winning the 2008 Champions League final in Moscow

Ryan Giggs has been named as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2009.

The Welshman, the most decorated player in the history of English football, beat Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button into second place.

Heptathlete champion Jessica Ennis came third.

Giggs, 36, won a record-breaking 11th Premier League title this year and appeared in his third Champions League final. He was also honoured by his fellow professionals, who voted him the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year.

The lavish ceremony, held at the Sheffield Arena, also paid an emotional tribute to swashbuckling golfing legend Seve Ballesteros, who is recovering from brain surgery.

Compatriot José María Olazábal handed Ballesteros the Lifetime Achievement award at his home in Spain, after a standing ovation from the Sheffield crowd.

England’s Ashes heroes were named as team of the year, but coach Andy Flower lost out to England’s football coach Fabio Capello for the coach of the year award.

Unsurprisingly, after another year in which he rewrote the record books, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt was named the Overseas personality of the year.

Major Phil Packer received the Helen Rollason award for his extensive charity work despite severe spinal cord injuries suffered in Iraq in 2008.

15-year-old diver Tom Daley won the Young Sports Personality trophy for the second time, while comedian Eddie Izzard received a special award for running 43 marathons in 51 days for Sport Relief.
