Togo driver murdered by gunmen

January 8, 2010

The driver of the Togo team bus has been killed after the bus came under gunfire in Angola, according to Sky Sports.

Togo are due to begin their African Cup of Nations campaign on Monday, but it is unclear whether or not the competition will go ahead after this attack.

Two players and two medics are reported to be injured, but the extent of their injuries has not been confirmed.

Nantes striker Thomas Dossevi said: “We are still in hospital. We were machine-gunned like dogs and had to remain hidden under our seats for around 20 minutes to avoid the bullets.”

The Videprinter was looking forward to covering the African Nations – group previews were due to be published tomorrow and text commentary for the opening game on Sunday was planned. Obviously this pales into insignificance in light of this attack, and the tournament may well be cancelled if the authorities decide that Angola cannot guarantee the security of players, officials, and spectators.

More news expected soon.
