Minnows Malawi brush aside Algeria

Malawi easily beat Algeria in the second game of Group A in the African Cup of Nations.

Algeria, heavy favourites before the game, were hugely disappointing against a Malawi side widely expected to be the group’s whipping boys.

In contrast to Mali and Angola’s goal-fest in front of a full house at the same stadium yesterday, this was a much more straightforward victory, in front of a sparse but noisy crowd.

Malawi took a shock lead after a lack of communication in the Algeria defence lead to keeper Fawzi Chaouchi blasting the ball against Esau Kanyenda. Russell Mwafulirwa smashed the rebound into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

The underdogs extended their lead shortly afterwards in style, when Elvis Kafoteka headed a Moses Chavula cross past the helpless Chaouchi.

More comical goalkeeping just after half-time, when Chaouchi dropped a cross at the feet of Russell, lead to the Flames’ third. Russell hammered a shot against the post and in the resultant penalty area melee Davi Banda reacted quickest to stab home.

Algeria were unable to break down a spirited but fortunate Malawi, who survived a number of goalkeeping howlers themselves to go top of the group.
