Hosts Angola took a big step towards the African Cup of Nations quarter-finals with a comfortable 2-0 win over Malawi.

Angola were the better side throughout, with Flavio and Mabina excelling again after their 4-4 draw with Mali on the tournament’s opening night.

After a first half in which Angola were by far the better side, the hosts look the lead when neat play by Mabina and Djalma produced a cross for Flavio to comfortable head into the Malawi goal on 48 minutes. Flavio had scored two headed efforts against Mali and now leads the goalscoring charts in the 2010 AFCON.

Mabina’s pace caused problems all evening, but it was Manucho who sealed the win five minutes later when he disposesed Peter Mponda far too easily and lashed home.

Malawi were a far cry from the side who despatched Algeria 3-0, and never looked likely to get back into the game. Angola looked likely to extend their lead when substitute Mantorres (who came on for the injured Flavio) fired over from a free kick, but the score remained the same and Angola lie on four points, one ahead of Malawi and Algeria, who beat Mali earlier in the day.

Mali looked strangely disinterested for much of the match; Freddie Kanoute was surprisingly subdued and they rarely created anything after Rafik Halliche headed into the empty net for Algeria after poor defending from a free kick two minutes before the break.

Mali, the group favourites, now sit bottom of the group with a game to play: a win over Malawi would mean that an Angola win would take them through; otherwise they will have to rely on goal difference after their bizarre 4-4 draw with the hosts on Sunday.

The final Group A games take place on Monday.
