Thompson installed as new bid chairman

May 17, 2010

Geoff Thompson

Geoff Thompson has been appointed by the FA as the new chairman of England’s bid to host the World Cup in 2018.

The announcement comes just hours after his predecessor Lord Triesman resigned after a newspaper sting.

Lord Triesman was recorded suggesting rival bidders Spain and Russia were planning to bribe referees at the 2010 World Cup and his comments were published in the Mail on Sunday.

Thompson was chairman of the FA from 1999 to 2008 and is a Vice President on both the FIFA and UEFA Executive Committees.
